The smiley, smiley face or funny face as it is sometimes known as is a cartoon representation of a smiling human face characterised by a round yellow circle with two black dots for eyes and a half circle for the mouth. Recently "smiley" has been used as a generic term for any emoticon.

The earliest recorded examples of the use of smileys are attributed to a man named Harvey Ball who worked for a company called State Mutal Life Assurance in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. Ball never made any profit from the iconic image as he never attempted to use, promote or trademark the image and subsequently fell into the public domain.
